The goal of the European Higher Education Interoperability Framework (HEIF) are seamless learner journeys across Europe, where learners can easily combine shorter and longer courses from different institutions and countries.

The use cases represent different situations where data needs to move from one institution to another, or where their systems need to work hand in hand, in order to make studying and researching across different institutions possible.

European Universities alliances are perfect test beds for these challenges, and we defined these use cases together with experts from over 30 alliances.

Core use cases

The six core use cases represent different steps in a learner journey. This journey can involve a full, traditional degree programme, a single course or a short self-standing course leading to a micro-credential.

  • UC1
  • ...
  • UC6

Importantly, this journey forms a cycle – the credential earned from one course or programme is often the entry ticket to further learning later on.

Foundational use cases

Underpinning this cycle, there are two foundational use cases. They are arguably the most important ones, since virtually all core use cases rely on them:

  • UC7
  • UC8
