This year, 2024, marked the 20th anniversary of the impactful Erasmus Mundus programme – the pioneer initiative leading the international dimension of the Erasmus+ and predecessor EU programmes in the field of higher education.
To mark this important landmark in the lifetime of the programme, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) and the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) hosted a high-level 20th Anniversary conference in Brussels, on 27-28 May 2024, under the title “Beyond Borders and Boundaries: 20 years of Erasmus Mundus”. The conference was organised in a hybrid mode, foreseeing both onsite (by invitation) and online participation.
This inspiring, celebratory event was an opportunity to highlight, discuss and reflect on the multi-layered impact of Erasmus Mundus. A comprehensive Impact Study was released during the event. The publication highlights the transformative effects of Erasmus Mundus on individuals, higher education institutions, and countries within and beyond the European Union over the past two decades. The study provides a historical overview of Erasmus Mundus's evolution and offers a detailed analysis of its broad impact on all involved actors. It examines the programme's effects at the European, national, and global levels, leading to a forward-looking exploration of its future. The study combines historical data from the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) with primary data from two surveys, enriched with insights from workshops, interviews, and consultations with over 165 experts at various levels of the programme.
The programme zoomed into related individual and institutional transformations in the areas of governance, learning and teaching, international cooperation, and administrative processes, covering also questions of sustainability. All this with a view to the future of Erasmus Mundus, beyond the current programme generation. Moreover, the incredible impact the programme has made over the past 20 years can be explored through the detailed infographic shared on the Erasmus Mundus Community.
Moreover an album with photos from the Anniversary conference has been shared with community members. If you want to gain access, you are invited to join the Erasmus Mundus Community and the News Stream group where the album is located.
