The HERE Study Visit in Ghent, Belgium, offered valuable insights into the inclusive internationalisation of higher education. Hosted by Ghent University, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, and the Support Centre Inclusive Higher Education (SIHO), the visit provided participants with an in-depth look at how these institutions are working to make international opportunities accessible to a diverse student body. Representatives from various institutions, including staff, students, and policymakers, shared their experiences and strategies for fostering inclusivity.

One key focus was on how the Flanders region has become a leader in inclusive internationalisation within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Participants discussed how projects like inclusivehighereducation.eu are supporting public authorities and institutions in implementing the EHEA’s Principles and Guidelines on the Social Dimension.

This collaborative approach has made a significant impact on ensuring international mobility and study programmes are accessible to students from diverse backgrounds, including those facing financial, social, or linguistic challenges.

The visit also explored how institutions can support inclusive internationalisation through policies and practices such as mobility programmes, internationalisation at home, and hybrid exchanges. Discussions covered support services for international students, peer-to-peer assistance, and the importance of considering mental health and well-being in internationalisation efforts.

At the system level, participants examined how Flanders' policies are shaping more inclusive higher education environments, with mental health and student support services identified as key components. The event also highlighted the role of EU programmes like Erasmus+ in promoting inclusion, and how actors across Europe can work together to make mobility and collaboration more equitable.

The study visit in Ghent provided participants with valuable lessons on how to advance inclusive internationalisation, offering practical strategies for institutions and policymakers to adopt moving forward.
