GENERAL INFORMATION
TAM title: Embracing Artificial Intelligence in education: New programs, disciplines, and methods
Type of Event: Seminar
Modality: Presential
Location: Technical University of Moldova, Chisinau
Country: Moldova
Dates: 14 – 15 March 2024
Participants: Over 80 representatives of higher education institutions from Moldova, IT companies, the Ministry of Education and Research, EU Delegation, as well as the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education and Research.
THEMES COVERED
The role of Artificial Intelligence in transforming higher education – regulations and status
AI technologies for the education and research – tools and models, ethics consideration
Integrating AI technologies in education and AI-driven teaching and learning methods
Preparing for the AI-driven labour market
KEY OUTCOMES
During the workshop, participants:
- Improved their understanding of how Generative AI is transforming teaching, learning, and research in higher education.
- Developed capacity to design and support university-level strategies and regulations for the ethical and effective use of AI.
- Learned to apply AI technologies in curriculum design, teaching methods, and assessment practices.
- Discussed the ethical, legal, and security implications of integrating AI tools into academic contexts.
OVERVIEW
The seminar was held in Romania over two days and focused on the opportunities and challenges of using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching, learning, and research. The seminar examined how AI is transforming education, from teaching methods and assessment systems to curriculum design and open science practices. Discussions explored future skills for educators and students, ways AI can enhance creativity and critical thinking, and the ethical and security implications of its use in academia.
The program included expert presentations, interactive sessions, and hands-on activities using tools like Menti and Miro. Topics covered included the role of AI in higher education, AI tools and models for research, ethics and regulation, and AI-driven teaching and learning methods. Practical examples demonstrated how Generative AI can be integrated into projects and assessments. Participants received over 500 slides of resources with links to courses, publications, and best practices. The seminar achieved its goal of helping participants understand the role of AI in higher education and providing practical guidance for its effective and ethical implementation.
THE FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY
Title of the activity: Follow-up meeting and discussions
Dates: 27 June 2024
Audience: 23 participants, including representatives from departments managing 12 bachelor’s and 12 master’s programs, covering a total of around 3,000 students, as well as undergraduate and master’s student representatives.
Description: The follow-up meeting was preceded by discussions within the academic departments of the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics (CIM) and the Directorate of Academic Management and Quality Assurance. The main goal of the meeting was to analyze models for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and to propose a faculty-wide strategy for their implementation to the CIM Faculty Council.
The meeting served as a platform for exchanging best practices among academic departments and for aligning approaches to the use of AI tools in teaching and learning. A key outcome of the meeting was the approval of a unified strategy for the ethical and effective use of generative AI tools, developed in coordination with the University’s Academic Management Directorate. The strategy includes two main components: defining clear guidelines for teachers on the use of AI tools to ensure consistency and transparency across courses and updating the curriculum structure to require that each teacher explicitly states what types of AI usage are permitted in their classes, assignments, and assessments.
These initiatives aim to improve understanding among both teachers and students regarding the appropriate use of AI in academic work, promote responsible integration of AI technologies, and support academic integrity and quality within the university.
ENHANCING IMPACT: PROPOSED NEXT STEPS
- Disseminate Guidelines: Share the approved AI usage guide with all faculty and departments to ensure consistent understanding and application.
- Train Faculty: Organize workshops to familiarize staff with generative AI tools, ethical use, and teaching applications.
- Orient Students: Provide sessions on responsible AI use, academic integrity, and acceptable practices in coursework and research.
- Monitor and Gather Feedback: Establish a mechanism to track implementation, collect feedback, and update the strategy as needed.
- Integrate with Policies: Align the AI strategy with existing academic regulations and revise them regularly to reflect technological developments.
