Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming societies and economies. It also has significant implications for higher education institutions. Beyond the research that higher education institutions conduct on AI, and its legal, ethical, and cultural implications, they are also AI users, for their own management and administration, but also as a means in research and increasingly also in education. In addition, they share the responsibility to prepare students and society for an AI-driven world.
This SPHERE online seminar addressed how AI impacts learning and teaching, and institutional strategy and explored its potential and risks. It featured case studies and shared experiences of AI use in higher education and professional contexts, to shape ethical and responsible approaches to its adoption. After a 2023 SPHERE seminar addressed AI in view of post-Covid developments, this was first SPHERE event dedicated to the matter.
The seminar was designed for the Higher Education Network Experts (HERE) community and National Erasmus+ Offices (NEOs); 104 participants registered, which included HERE from ministries and national agencies, senior management of institutions, academic and administrative personnel, and students.
