Expanding Horizons: Erasmus+ Mission in Panama

Daniel Uriel VENTURA CACERES @National Focal Points • 2 July 2025

In the heart of Central America, Panama is stepping up its commitment to international academic collaboration, thanks to the dedicated work of Giovanna Cordero, the Erasmus+ National Focal Point (ENFP) of the country. Her most recent efforts include a strategic meeting at the Universidad del Istmo (UI), focused on promoting Erasmus+ programmes and strengthening institutional engagement.

Held as part of ongoing outreach activities, the meeting brought together key representatives from UI, including Dean Juan Pablo Cardozo; Fernando Téllez, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs; Catalina Cadena, Deputy Dean for Quality Control; and Luis Vallarino, Director of International Affairs. Also present were Ina Kokinova from the EU Delegation in Panama and Giovanna Cordero herself, representing the Erasmus+ National Focal Points network.

The meeting provided a platform to recognize UI’s recent participation in two Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) projects submitted in the latest call that closed in February 2025. This successful engagement demonstrates UI’s growing interest in internationalisation and academic cooperation within the Erasmus+ framework.

During the session, Giovanna Cordero introduced additional opportunities available through the programme, including the Jean Monnet Actions—which promote teaching and research on the European Union—and the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees, which offer full scholarships for international postgraduate study in Europe.

Her presentation underscored the strategic value of Erasmus+ in broadening the academic landscape of Panamanian higher education institutions. By helping them identify relevant actions, build strong proposals, and foster European partnerships, Giovanna plays a key role in connecting Panama’s academic sector to Europe’s educational opportunities.

This meeting is one of many steps taken under her leadership to create greater awareness and participation in Erasmus+ programmes in Panama. Through continuous dialogue with universities, promotion of funding calls, and support for project development, Giovanna Cordero is driving Panama forward on its journey to becoming a more active and visible player in the Erasmus+ community.

As Panama builds stronger bridges with Europe through education, the dedication of its ENFP is not only invaluable—it is inspiring.
