TVET in Liberia: First Steps with Erasmus+

June 17, 2025 – James Mulbah, the Erasmus+ National Focal Point (ENFP) for Liberia, met with representatives from the Spanish organisation Mundus — Beatrice Bellet and Sergio Lagarde — joined by Wafa M’Sallem, Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The purpose of the meeting was to better understand the current situation of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Liberia and to explore how existing European programmes, particularly Erasmus+, could help support local efforts.

During the exchange, Mr. Mulbah shared a clear picture of the urgent needs on the ground:

  • Many young people lack access to skills training;
  • A shortage of qualified trainers persists across key sectors;
  • There is strong interest from national authorities in developing the TVET sector.

For its part, Mundus presented examples of past projects in Africa that have helped develop training curricula, supported teacher mobility, and offered guidance in project design.

Several practical outcomes emerged from the discussion:

  • A shared intention to build future activities based on Liberia’s training needs;
  • The idea of launching a pilot initiative to upskill current TVET instructors in sectors like agriculture, electricity, and construction;
  • A capacity-building session scheduled for July 10, designed to introduce Erasmus+ opportunities and practical tools for TVET institutions and professionals in Liberia.

This initiative is part of the wider Erasmus+ effort to strengthen vocational education systems and improve access to skills development across Sub-Saharan Africa. It also highlights the commitment of the ENFP in Liberia to actively support positive change by linking national needs with concrete opportunities.
