How has international student mobility changed over the past decade, and what does this tell us about Europe’s position as a study destination?
Produced within the EU funded Study in Europe initiative, this report analyses international student mobility trends over a 10 year period, with a particular focus on the Study in Europe region: the 27 EU Member States and six countries associated to Erasmus+: Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye.
The analysis brings together data from national and international sources, including the UOE joint data collection by UNESCO, OECD and Eurostat, as well as European Commission Erasmus+ data.
The report explores how student flows to and from Europe have developed over time, where internationally mobile students come from, which destinations they choose, and how patterns differ across countries and study fields. It also provides useful context for understanding Europe’s changing position in the global higher education landscape.
For colleagues working in international higher education, student recruitment or policy, the publication offers a useful evidence base for thinking about changing mobility patterns and future priorities.
